About Denver Projection Mapping
Our Story
Denver Projection Mapping was founded by Joel Rekiel, a lifelong music industry professional who unexpectedly found his passion in immersive visual design. After spending years as a musician, then audio engineer, and then artist manager. Joel shifted careers and moved into the world of corporate audiovisual production. There, he discovered video engineering, projection systems, LED video wall technology, and the creative potential of digital art.
The spark came much earlier during college in Florida when Joel was mesmerized by the projection mapping shows at Disney. Later, he became fascinated by massive architectural projections in Europe and interactive art festivals around the world. Seeing those experiences firsthand inspired him to learn both the creative and technical sides of projection mapping.
With unused projectors sitting in the AV shop, he began experimenting, learning, and creating. The official start came when Joel began designing custom content for the Daniels & Fisher Clocktower in downtown Denver. Watching how the large-scale projection setup worked lit the fire that led to this company.
His first major breakthrough project was a fully immersive 3 wall projection blend for a crypto company featuring a custom designed 3D woolly mammoth. The animation walked across all three walls inside a winter environment, paired with a real time sunset Joel created and synced perfectly with the actual Denver sunset. That moment blending digital art with the real world, cemented his direction and made projection mapping the focus of his creative life.
Who We Are
Today, Denver Projection Mapping is a solo-driven creative studio, led by Joel, supported by a trusted network of technicians and designers. Joel handles the majority of concept development, animation, 3D design, and technical setup, ensuring every project maintains a consistent vision and high standard.
For larger productions or quick-turnaround builds, we collaborate with a wide network of experienced projectionists, animators, and designers. We also proudly acknowledge Primary Focus Media, who helped us get started by renting us high-end projectors before we owned our own fleet.
